TitleManorial
DescriptionOriginal and copy material relating to or created by the Manor and Royalty of Whitstable and other manors holding lands in Whitstable. The Manor of Whitstable had formerly been known as the Manor of Northwood.
AdminHistoryThe manor was bought by Charles Pearson in 1792. He employed John Zachariah Plummer, a Canterbury attorney, as steward. Yearly Courts Leet and Baron were held. The seat of the Lord of the manor was Tankerton Tower. Information on this building can be found under 'Topography'.
When the last owner of the title of the 'Manor or Lordship of Whitstable', Albert Mallandain, died in 1956 Whitstable Urban District Council decided to purchase the title for the town. They decided also to appoint a manor steward and chose Wallace Harvey in 1958. By Wallace Harvey's time however this role just involved the care of the record books of the manor court.
In 1974 the ownership of the manorial title passed to the succeeding Canterbury City Council although they did not revoke Wallace Harvey's stewardship.
