TitleReceivers' Vouchers
Date1642-1888
DescriptionReceivers' Vouchers consist of the various bills and accounts handed to the Receiver during the course of a financial year and from which he compiled the final account to be found in the Receivers' Accounts or Books. This series has several gaps and many of the existing vouchers are in a poor condition.
Until the 1860s the vouchers deal principally with the Dean and Chapter's estates. There are usually bills for timber, woodreeves' accounts, estate workmens' bills and rentals for the estates. There are often valuations and correspondence relating to the properties owned by the Dean and Chapter.
In the early 1860s there was a change in accounting which meant that bills for estate repairs and taxes were dealt with directly by the surveyor, who had to present his account for examination to the Receiver every six months. As a result, from 1863 many of the Receivers' Vouchers contain the surveyor's vouchers as well as lists of rents and tax receipts. Some only contain the surveyor's vouchers, with none of the Receiver's. Many of the later vouchers were originally in the `Boxes in the Basement' series.
The dates given for the vouchers are from St. Katherine's Day to St. Katherine's Day unless otherwise stated. The information contained in the vouchers is to be found in a summarized and often more complete form in the Receivers' Accounts and Books for the years covered, except for 1667-1668 (RV 6), 1724-1725 (RV 44) and 1803-1804 (RV 120), for which no account books exist. The year 1814-1815 is missing from both series.
