DescriptionThis series makes up one of the 4 series of scrapbooks in the dean and chapter archive. The other series are the Sede Vacante Scrapbooks, the Manuscript Scrapbooks and the Canterbury Letters. The Christ Church Letter series was begun by Joseph Brigstock Sheppard (1828-1895), who worked on the cathedral archives from the 1860s onwards. He compiled the first two volumes, the third volume being compiled earlier this century.
Some documents bear endorsements by Sheppard, such as ChCh Let II/11. Sheppard uses a distinctive symbol as a signature (eg ChCh Let II/15, inserted transcription).
Details of Canterbury Cathedral Priory monks are taken from J Greatrex, Biographical register of the English cathedral priories of the province of Canterbury, (Oxford, 1997). Greatrex numbers monks with the same name, and this scheme is used for this catalogue.
Details of clergy are taken from the standard works by Emden, Venn and Foster on graduates from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, as well as from the Le Neve Fasti Anglicanae series. Reference has also been made to the lists of incumbents included in E Hasted, History and topographical survey of the county of Kent, 12 vols (Canterbury, 1797-1801).
Details of bishops with sees outside England are take from PPB Gams, Series episcoporum ecclesiae catholicae (Regensburg, 1873).
The following volumes have also been used during cataloguing
Bliss, WH, and Twemlow, JA, Calendar of entries in the papal registers relating to Great Britain and Ireland, papal letters vol iv (London, 1902)
Collinson, P, Ramsay, N, and Sparks, M, A history of Canterbury Cathedral (Oxford, 1995)
