DescriptionFrom: [Henry VI, king of England]
To: [Thomas Goldstone, III, prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory]

John [Stafford], archbishop of Canterbury, has just died. The king proposes Cardinal [John Kempe], archbishop of York and Chancellor, as the new archbishop. The prior recently sent some of his monks to the king to obtain the king's licence for a free election but the king urges the cardinal's merits. The cardinal was born near Canterbury, was largely brought up among the monks and has always 'had the said Chirche in grete reverence and the ministers therof in love and tendernesse'. The king has also written to the pope asking for the appointment. The prior is to give credence to what Henry Vavasor?, usher of the Chamber, shall say in this matter. Sign manual of Henry VI. Signet letter. Dated 4 Jun, no year. [Date: Date of Stafford's death and Kempe's election. Neither the king nor the prior is actually named.]
Given at the manor of Sheen [Surrey].

Endorsed with contemporary address.
