| Description | Copies of 6 documents relating to the dispute between Henry III and the barons. Nos 1 to 3 are on a large sheet of parchment, nos 4-6 on a small slip stitched to the bottom edge.
(1) Louis IX's arbitration award, restoring the king's powers and privileges and quashing the provisions of Oxford. Dated at Amiens [Somme], 23 Jan 1264.
(2) Letter of pope Urban IV, annulling all conspiracies against the king and declaring that oaths taken to support them are not binding. Dated at Orvieto [Terni], 23 Aug 1263.
(3) Letter from pope Urban IV to William, archdeacon of Paris, empowering him to absolve Henry III from any oath he may have taken to the barons. Dated at Orvieto, 16 Sep 1263.
(4) Letter from the barons to the king, sent before the battle of Lewes, professing their loyalty to him. No date [12 May 1264?].
(5) Letter of defiance from Henry III to [Simon de Montfort], earl of Leicester and G[ilbert] de Clare in reply to (4). Dated at Lewes, 12 May [1264].
(6) Letter of defiance from Richard, king of the Romans, and Edward, eldest son of the king [later Edward I] to the barons. Dated at Lewes, 12 May [1264].
Between nos 3 and 4 at the end of the sheet there is a list of names, possibly omitted from no 1.
