DescriptionRelating to the payment of the tenth in aid of the Holy Land, granted to Edward I. Prior Henry of Eastry was summoned before the abbot of Waltham Abbey and the dean of [St Paul's Cathedral] London, adminstrators ('executor') of the tenth, to account for £200 deposited with the priory. Details of letter from of J[ohn of Pontoise], bishop of Winchester, relating to payments made to the abbot and convent of St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury, and the prior and convent of Rochester Cathedral Priory, collectors of the tenth in Canterbury and Rochester dioceses appointed by him and O[liver Sutton], late bishop of Lincoln, for expenses, and payment of the remaining £189 10s 9d, to [Italian] merchants of the societies of Mozi, Spini and Clarentini. The priory was exonerated and it was decreed that its obligation for £200 should be returned.
Also details of a letter from the bishops of Winchester and Lincoln to St Augustine's Abbey, dated 29 May 1294 at the New Temple, instructing the abbey not to exact the tenth from the priory because it had already paid. The abbey in its last account before Oliver Sutton was charged with a payment of £102 2s 11½d which it said had been deposited with the priory, but did not show the bishops' letter. Now that the letters have been exhibited, the abbey is acquitted.
