DescriptionFrom: Bernard Roiardi, archdeacon of Xanten [Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany], papal chaplain, auditor of contradictory letters

Mgr Francus de Podiobonizi, proctor of the prior and convent of Dover Priory, obtained papal letters from Pope John XXII, dated 10 Dec 1316, at Avignon [Vaucluse, France], addressed to the bishop of Rochester, the prior of Rochester Cathedral Priory and the archdeacon of Rochester. The subprior and convent of Dover Priory have complained that their predecessors have granted its tithes, lands, rights and other possessions to many clerks and layman, for life, for a long time or in perpetuity, at farm or for an annual rent, to the priory's harm, and some of the grantees have sought papal letters of confirmation. If the addressees find that anything has been alienated or taken from Dover Priory illegally they are to arrange for it to be restored, any documents to the contrary notwithstanding.
Mgr Rudolph ('Rodulfus') de Lacu, proctor of the prior and chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, opposed the letters, but withdrew his opposition on condition that the priory should not be summoned by these letters and that the letters should not be extended to it, which Francus promised before Bernard. Letter 'N' at end of document.
Given at Avignon [Vaucluse, France].
