TitleRecusation of a judge
PreviousNumbersD 149 (Norris)
Date[1282]
DescriptionFrom: Hugh de Derby, substitute of the principal proctor of the prior and chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory and proctor of Geoffrey of Romney, monk of the same church
To: Mgr Robert de Stowe

Working copy of DCc-ChAnt/D/82. Robert is commissary of John Pecham, archbishop of Canterbury, papal judge delegate, in a case between the subprior and convent of Dover Priory and the cathedral priory. Hugh objects to him because he has several times acted as an advocate for Dover Priory and was also an advocate in a case between the cathedral priory sede vacante and John [de Chishull I], late bishop of London, concerning metropolitical jurisdiction and was the bishop's servant. Hugh also objects to him because there is an appeal pending in a case before him between John Baton, rector of Eastry, and Nicholas Barrok', the priory's bailiff. Robert de Seleseya, monk, the cathedral priory's proctor, proposes the recusation before the archbishop. No date. [Date: After 30 Sep 1282, when Stowe was commissioned to act in the case (DCc-ChAnt/D/60), and probably after 12 Nov 1282, when he acted as commissary (DCc-ChAnt/D/102).]
