DescriptionFrom: Nigel, bishop of Ely
To: Pope Eugenius III

He has heard that Bernard, bishop of St David's, wishes to withdraw from his obedience to the archbishop of Canterbury. Bernard's predecessors were obedient to previous archbishops, were consecrated by them and were bound to them by deeds of profession. Bernard was consecrated by Archbishop Ralph [d'Escures] and made a deed of profession to him which is still known to be at Canterbury. Since Robert has been bishop, he has known Bernard often to answer the summons of Archbishop William [of Corbeil] and to obey his instructions, like any other suffragan. He also attended and assisted at the consecration of Archbishop Theobald at the summons of Alberic, bishop of Ostia. Robert asks the pope not to listen to Bernard's claims, which are fabulous. No date. [Date: date of related letters.]

Endorsed with description as the testimony of Nigel bishop of Ely against Bernard bishop of St David's who did not wish to remain subject to Canterbury in late 12th or early 13th cent hand.
