DescriptionFrom: James, canon of Bologna, papal chaplain, auditor of contradictory letters

Mgr Luke de Guartino, clerk, proctor of the master and brothers of St Mary's Hospital, Dover, obtained a papal privilege for the hospital from Pope Nicholas III, dated 13 Dec 1278 at St Peter's, Rome (recited). The pope receives the hospital under his protection, grants it various privileges as specified and confirms all liberties and privileges which have previously been granted to it. He confirms the hospital's possessions in lands, rents, advowsons and tithes as specified (many details of individual possessions and names of donors given). Provisions relating to the rule to be followed at the hospital, the reception of new brothers and the election of the master. Witness list.
Mgr Philip de Pomonte, clerk, proctor of the prior and chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, objected to this on behalf of the priory and its officers but withdrew his objection when the other party agreed that the privilege would not be used against the priory in cases between it and the hospital and that the hospital should not acquire any new rights as a result of it.
Given at St Peter's, Rome [Roma, Italy].

Endorsed with description in late 13th cent hands and note that the document is kept in the chest which has foundations of various colleges in mid 15th cent hand.
