Title | Missal |
Date | c1430 |
Description | Part of a Sarum missal, including most of the sanctorale with the common of Saints and the votive masses. On the last folio is written in a 16th century hand 'Alexander Herlekynden owghts this book'. That Harlakenden name, the fact that the page for All Saints day (f.52) is the most richly decorated, and that there is an additional votive mass of All Saints for use in the Easter season, suggest an association with All Saints, Woodchurch. The missal is very elaborate for a country parish church, but may have been ordered from London and given by a wealthy donor. The Harlakendens were a lesser gentry family from the north of the parish. Alexander Harlakenden, son of Roger and Alice Colepeper, may have taken the missal into his care when it was not longer in use in the church in 1549. The last folio has also some prayers connected with St Augustine added in the C16, perhaps stemming from a user's connection with the abbey. This remaining part of the missal came up for sale in 1916 and was bought by Hon K F Gibbs, archdeacon of St Albans, to avert its export to USA. It was then bought for St Augustine's College by an anonymous 'Friend of the College' in 1916 because of the above [tenuous] connection with St Augustine's. It should not be confused with the 'St Augustine's Missal'' at Corpus Christi College Cambridge, MS 270. Ex info Mrs M G Sparks |
