TitleFRIENDS OF CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL
Date1927-1991
DescriptionThe Cathedral Friends was founded in 1927, the first of its type in the country. Dean G K A Bell was the founder of the Friends; Miss Margaret Babington was its steward from 1928 until 1958. The Friends established Festivals of Music and Drama, from which the current Canterbury Festival evolved. Key figures in the world of music, drama and literature were involved in these festivals.

Since its early years, the Friends organisation has funded restoration and other projects for the cathedral. In addition, gifts have come to the cathedral through the Friends. The Friends have also had an active publication programme, including the Friends Chronicle and Report (sets of which are maintained by the Cathedral Library), and a number of specific works which have made a crucial contribution towards the understanding of the history, fabric and life of the cathedral.

An exhibition celebrating 50 years of the Friends was produced by the Cathedral Archives and Library in 2002.
