[No date. A clue to this are two references to `the lord' as the presiding authority. One of these describes an entry as being terminated `on another roll before the lord' (the scribe had run out of space). The title `lord' suggests that it was the archbishop who was presiding and not a commissary sede vacante such as Richard de Clyve (who was a brother) or Hugh de Forsham (a magister). Woodruff does treat the roll as one of Clyve's, arguing that it has become detached from a document with the reference DCc/Ch Ant F 29 (which is a visitation of Clyve sede vacante in 1294), and he prints the two documents together as one (Archaeologia Cantiana XXXII, pp.161-2).
Comparison of the details in VR11 and F 29, however, indicates that VR 11 is late than the other record, A man called `Simon, chaplain of Fairfield in F 29 is referred to as `Simon, once chaplain of Fairfield in VR 11. On the other hand, VR 11 and VR 12 are very similar in style and physical appearance, and references to `the lord' in VR 11 suggest it might belong instead, like VR 12, to the pontificate of Archbishop Pecham. A good compromise would be to say VR 11 and 12 were both begun in 1291 and the closing months of Pecham's pontificate, and perhaps carried on by Clyve sede vacante.] |
