Order NumberCCA-DCc-SealBag/12
TitleSeal Bag No. 12
Date12th-13th century?
DescriptionEgg-shaped oval, 7 x 10cm. An unusual, almost modern-looking design, comprising series of ivy-leaf or heart-shaped motifs outlined and joined together with yellow lines, enclosing stripes of lime green, bright blue, white, orange, a further band of lime green, and blue at the tip, with adjacent rows beginning with the same colours in different sequences, set on a purple-brown background. The bag is sewn together with blue thread; the design may be on its side. It may be the product of Spanish workmanship under Eastern influence.
Recent research -personal comment by Ana Cabrera in 2018 suggests that 'it is similar to the Bamberg textile, which dates to c. 970. This fragment could be about the same date, or even earlier. Five colours used, so constructed of a five-thread weave. Probably made in the near East . Cannot have been made after the 11th century'.
