Description | This series includes documents relating to the various stages in the process of appointing archbishops, as well as to the enthronements of new archbishops and to the cathedral's sede vacante jurisdiction during vacancies. There is also material relating to the deaths and funerals of archbishops, as well as material relating to sede vacante business. It covers the post-Reformation period only. For the pre-Reformation period, see especially DCc/SVSB. The series DCc/SVSB also includes documents covering elections and enthronements during the period 1605 and 1805. See especially DCc/SVSB/II. There is a separate series of documents known as 'conge d'elire', DCc/CDE. See also the collection of service sheets and other printed items held by the library.
The reference codes are constructed using the year date. Thus, when there are no documents relating to a particular year, there are gaps in the numbering sequence. This series includes material previously classified as 'enthronements' and 'archbishop'.
See also Biography WAR in the collections of Canterbury Cathedral Library for a printed roll with an account of the enthronement of Archbishop William Warham.
This series was catalogued by Miss Pam Dagwell in 2002, with assistance from Cressida Annesley. For a listing made in the early 20th century, see Bunce's 'Schedule', vol 1. |
