TitleSeal Books
Date1664-1999
DescriptionThe seal books are the Dean and Chapter's record of the documents to which they have applied seals. The most common of these were leases. The dean, vice-dean and treasurers held seal keys which meant that all three (or representatives of all three with the appropriate keys) had to be present to seal a document. This appeared to be true until the 1880s, when the signatures of the dean and vice-dean or the dean alone appear.
The seal fees were written up by the Dean and Chapter's auditors. The entries consist of a brief description of the document concerned. Until 1775 they list the amount of the fine that the lessees paid for renewing their leases.
