Description | Writer: Gostling, William, antiquary, vicar of Stone in Oxney, Kent
Detailed account of his difficulties since 1753 in obtaining an annual payment from Sir Edward Hales, lessee of the rectory, and his stewards, Mr Baker and Mr Barling. His predecessor, Mr [Culpeper] Savage, also had difficulties. Gostling appealed to the dean and chapter to arbitrate but has not yet obtained a judgement. Quotes from the endowment of the vicarage in the 'Decem Scriptores', which mentions an allowance of hay and straw, for which he should get compensation. He asked Dr Ducard to compare the published version with the manuscript. Quotes letters from Richard Halford and Thomas Benson, auditors, and from him to the dean. He has consulted Archbishop [Secker] and, because the matter is unresolved, will include the matter in his return for Archbishop [Cornwallis's] 1770 visitation. |
