Description | Johannis de Hyspano Casus Decretalium. "Incipit lib' casuum Dec' talium a dno Gregorio papa Ixo compilator' de aliis voluminibus editar' ab epo magro Johe de Hyspano sacerdote compilatus." The last 58 leaves of 94 leaves are in a later hand, without illuminated ititials, and apparently belong to another treatise on the Decretals, it begins "In huius libri principio quinque sunt prenotanda", and ends "sic non habunt gratuita". On the fly-leaf is `liber ecclie. Xi Cant.' and `Casus decretal' Adame prioris et Johis hyspan'. Possibly Adam Chillenden, who was prior of Christ Church from 1263 to 1274, was the author of the second treatise. On a blank leaf has been inserted a copy of a letter from Prior Thomas (Ringmere) to B(enedict) Cardinal deacon of St. Nicholas in carcere Tulliano, apologizing for the delay which had occurred in the payment of the Christ Church contribution towards the Cardinal's pension. Benedict was created a Cardinal in 1281. Ringmere resigned the priorate in 1284. No. 628 in Eastry's catalogue (James, Ancient Libraries, p.74). Described in Kerr, Medieval Manuscripts, p280. Written in England, a gift to Christ Church Canterbury from Adam de Chillenden, prior. |
