Description | Miscellaneous papers, viz.:- (1.) Description of Christ Church-yard. (2.) An account of what was laid out on the church from 1660 to 1662. (3.) "The matter of fact between the Church of Canterbury and the militia there stated." 1664 (4.) Papers relating to the claim of Mrs. Turner (widow of Dean Turner?) to an interest in the lease of a house "near the Plumbery". (5.) Contenta cuiusdam libri manuscripti membranei ignoti authoris sive anonymi. (Apparently a Christ Church register.) Endorsed "Lieger booke which I know not by what meanes Mr. W. Wats parson of St. Albans hath got into his hands". (6.) Orders of Chapter about the distribution of "Corn Money". 1615 to 1637. (7.) The Dean and Chapter's reasons for not improving the Beadsmen's wages. (8.) Papers relating to cases of insubordination on the part of certain Beadsmen (c.1667). (9.) A letter dated July, 1644, but without signature or address; in which the writer says, "The malignants must insult over us for their late success at Newarke, and it was very heavy news indeed, but we received a contradiction of it yesterday to our great refreshing". In a postscript the writer adds that the tenants of the Dean and Chapter have been publicly warned to pay their rents only to Mr. Lambard Godfrey "solicitor general for these parts". (10.) Magisterial summons addressed to Dr. Meric Casaubon, (vicar of Minster and prebendary of Christ Church, Canterbury) to answer certain charges, &c.; dated July 1, 1644. (11.) The case between the Dean and Chapter and the widow Turner concerning her lease summarily stated (see above, No. 4). A house had been built at the west end of the church about the year 1633, this was now regarded as an incroachment and the Dean and Chapter refused to renew the lease. (12.) A petition from the Beadsmen to the King for an increase of their stipends, and other papers relating to their grievances. 1662 to 1665. Belonged to William Somner. |
