TitleLibel, 'Libellus noster contra R. de gernem''
Date1280
DescriptionLibel of Peter de Verul' and Ph[ilip] [de] [?Pomonte], proctors of the prior and chapter of Christ Church against Mr Robert de Gernemu[e], archdeacon of Canterbury. [From their case over the exercise of metropolitan jurisdiction during vacancies of the archiepiscopal see, heard at the papal curia in Rome]. [Not dated. Probably 1280: an appeal by Gernemue against the prior and chapter, made at the Roman Curia and dated 6 Feb 1280 (SVSB II p42) calls for their appearance there to contest the case with him. The libel, in Roman script, appears to belong to a later stage, i.e. when the appeal reached the Curia. But this stage can have been no later than 1280 since Gernemue died later that year (Fasti, Monastic Cathedrals 1066-1300, p15)
