| Description | From: Richard II, king of England To: the prior of canterbury Cathedral Priory
[Document damaged. Large areas of text lost or illegible. Sense unclear in places.] The sailors of a ship called 'la kryland' of Zeeland? ('Seland') [Netherlands], carrying coals from Newcastle [upon Tyne, Northumberland], had reached London but were shipwrecked at Seasalter and Whitstable and lost most of their cargo. The priory's servants ('minister') arrested 4 of the wealthier sailors with the goods that had been saved from the ship. Evidence, including cocket letters and the testimony of Nicholas Brembre, mayor of London, and John Philipot of the same city, proves that the sailors are legitimate ('legalis') sailors and merchants. The king therefore commands the prior to have the sailors released and their goods restored to them. Dated 1RicII, rest of date lost. Given at Westminster [Middlesex]. |
