DescriptionFrom: John le Romeyn ('Romanus'), canon of York Cathedral
To: the vicars choral of York Cathedral

An annual payment of 13s 4d, payable for the land of Goodramgate ('Gutherumgate') [York] which he purchased ('comparo') with his own money which lies next to the messuage of the prebend of South Newbald and [the messuage of] the prebend of Wistow [both Yorkshire], payable as specified by the canon of the prebend of Wistow. If the canon of Wistow fails to pay, the vicars may re-enter the land and block up the door ('ostium') which is his entry to the land and do with it what they wish, except alienate it. John also gives the vicars a payment of 10s which Adam de Sunderlandwic gave him, payable as specified for land in the vill ('villa') of Garton [Yorkshire] by the succentor and vice-chancellor of York Cathedral to the vicars and minor clerks of the cathedral who are present at the anniversary of the day of John's death. The 10s is to be distributed together with the 13s 4d according to pre-eminence of office ('secundum gradus preminentia'). During his lifetime, John has caused those who presume to withdraw the payments from the vicars to be excommunicated by the chapter of York and the vicars. The grant is made for his soul and the souls of his ancestors. For greater security, John has caused the document to be sealed with the seal of the chapter of York. No date.
