| Description | From: Martin, commissary of Robert Winchelsey, archbishop of Canterbury He has inspected the grant of Pope Boniface VIII, dated 29 Aug 1295 at Anagni (recited). Canterbury Cathedral Priory's petition shows that its income is diminishing from various causes as specified, including the flooding of its lands near the sea and the effect of the plague upon its livestock; a seaport, from which it used to receive £100 a year has also been lost. It also incurs heavy expenses in defending its rights. For these reasons it cannot provide its accustomed hospitality and opportunities for the honour of its church are diminished. The pope grants that the priory can appropriate the church of West Cliffe [Kent], which is not worth more than 20 marks a year. It can take possession of the church when the present rector leaves or dies, reserving a pension of £5 for the support of a vicar. The inspeximus is made and sealed with the seal of Martin's office at the request of the proctor of the prior and chapter. [Seal reunited with document on the basis of the entries in Beauvoir's catalogue and Bunce's index of seals, cited below.] Given at Canterbury.
