Robert de Lacy grants Robert of Rochford wardship ('custodia') of the manor of Southchurch and of all lands, rents and tenements belonging to Alice and Joan, daughters and heirs of 'Dominus' Peter of Southchurch, by way of inheritance, both the lands, tenements and rents held in chief of the king and others, together with the marriage of Alice and Joan, and other payments issuing from the lands as specified. Also the marsh called Canvey, after the term of William Shorune. To hold to Robert of Rochford until Alice and Joan reach full age. If they die before reaching full age, then the term is to run from heir to heir until one reaches full age.
Reserving to Robert de Lacy 2 parts of the lands, tenements, rents and the windmill of Polstead ('Polsted'') [in Great Waktering], which are held of the king in chief, for a term of 8 years. For an annual payment of 6 marks, payable to Robert of Rochford as specified. Right of distraint if payment in arrears. Satisfaction has been made from this property ('unde') to Robert of Rochford for the payment for the first year. At the end of this term the property shall revert to Robert of Rochford until the heirs reach full age.
Robert of Rochford shall pay the prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory an annual payment of £20. He shall provide Alice and Joan with necessary food and clothing and shall not marry them to anyone except his sons or his brother without Robert de Lacy's consent. He shall maintain the manor without waste or destruction. Robert of Rochford binds himself to indemnify Robert de Lacy against Alice and Joan for all issues from the lands, tenements and rents which are held in socage received or to be received from the time of the death of Alice and Joan's mother until they reach full age. If there is a demise ('dimissio') of the wardship and marriage Robert de Lacy is not bound to warrant them to Robert of Rochford.
