DescriptionFrom: William Reed, bishop of Chichester
To: Richard Gillyngham, prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory; the chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory sede vacante

[Document badly damaged. Large areas of text lost or illegible. Sense unclear in many places.] Relating to the collection of 1,200 florins as procurations for Pileus de Prata, archbishop of Ravenna, authorised by Pope Gregory XI. Recites letters from Pileus and the pope and the priory's mandate to William, dated 27 Nov [1374] at Canterbury. To pay these procurations, the priory has levied a tax of ¼d in the £ on all benefices and ecclesiastical goods in the province of Canterbury. William is to arrange the collection in the city and diocese of Chichester and send the money to the priory's collectors in London by 22 Jan. William has appointed collectors, including the dean and chapter of Chichester Cathedral, Mgr John Cordray, archdeacon of Lewes, and 'Dominus' William Wardieu, archdeacon of Chichester, but has not been able to comply with the mandate. Reasons given include the poverty of many benefices and the fact that many churches have been flooded by the sea and utterly destroyed. Dated 20 Jan, year lost. [Date: related certificates.]
Given at the bishop's manor of Ferring [Sussex].
