Description | From: Henry Despenser, bishop of Norwich To: John Fynch, prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory; the chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory sede vacante [Document badly damaged. Date, writer's name and other details supplied from calendared version cited below.] He has received the priory's commission, dated 25 Sep (recited). 'Dominus' Hugh Bray, rector of Burstow [Surrey] in the rural deanery of Croydon, and 'Dominus' William Kelby, rector of Thornham Magna [Suffolk], Norwich diocese, wish to exchange benefices. The priory consents to the exchange. It authorizes Henry to investigate the reasons for it and, if they seem lawful, to receive Hugh's resignation from Burstow and admit and institute William, who has been presented to the church by King Richard II, patron because the temporalities of the archbishopric are in his hands during the vacancy. William's induction is reserved to the priory. Henry has investigated the reasons for the exchange and approved it. He has admitted and instituted William to Burstow, having first received Hugh's resignation, reserving his induction to the priory. Given at Norwich [Norfolk].
Endorsed with a note [partly oblitereated] relating to the payment of ½ a mark for the exchange of the vicarages of New Romney and Folkestone and the payment of ½ a mark for induction to the rectory of Burstow, paid to the prior at Wickham ('Wycham'), in late 14th cent hand. |
