The priory's auditor of causes and commissary has proceeded against John Grene, who attacked John Everard, clerk, John of Rainham's parishioner, knowing that he was a clerk. The auditor of causes has sentenced him to perform penance, namely 2 beatings ('fustigatio') around Hollingbourne church and 2 beatings in the presence of the procession in Canterbury Cathedral on Sundays or feast days in hair drawers ('femorales') by 12 Mar. John of Rainham is commanded to warn John Grene and see that he performs his penance. If John Grene does not perform his penance he is to be excommunicated. John of Rainham tried to execute the mandate, but could not find John Grene. Given at Hollingbourne [Kent]. |
