Description | From: Mgr William de Lodelawe, official of the deanery of Shoreham To: the official of the court of Canterbury, appointed by the prior and chapter of Canterbury sede vacante, or his commissary He has received the official's mandate dated 20 Sep at Canterbury (recited). Richard de Godchep, citizen of London, died recently in London leaving property in the cities and dioceses of Canterbury and London and elsewhere so his will should be proved in the court of Canterbury. Richard's sons and William de Hedersete took away Richard's animals and other goods, contrary to his will. William cokefeld, Richard's executor, complained to the official. William de Lodelawe is to sequestrate all Richard's goods that he can find and issue a warning in Harrow church and the neighbouring churches to those who have kept Richard's goods to return them to him within 8 days. He is to find out the names of the offenders and cite them and William to appear in the church of St Mary-le-Bow, London, on 6 Nov. William de Lodelawe has sequestrated all Richard's goods in the rural deanery of Croydon, but, as he found by an inquiry of which he is sending a copy separately, William violated the sequestration and disposed of the goods before Richard was buried and before an inventory was made. He issued the warning as instructed, but he could find no-one culpable except William, whom he has cited to appear. Given at London.
Endorsed with note that the probates of the will are invalidated, all those hindering [the execution of] the will are to be denounced and Mgr Stephen Cotun is to be summoned for contempt and prevented from acting and 'Hurston'' in late 13th cent hands. |
