DescriptionFrom: Robert Winchelsey, archdeacon of Essex
To: the prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory

When he was at Dijon [Burgundy, France] on his way to the Roman curia he wrote to the prior that although it had been expressly stated that the prior and the monks should subscribe to the decree of his election in their own hands, it was clear that the subscriptions were written in a single hand. He therefore asked, and now asks again, that that two copies of the decree should be made, one for the pope and the other for the college of cardinals, with the subscription of each monk and the common seal of the chapter. If any monk does not know how to write another should subscribe for him.
Geoffrey of Romney ('Romenal'), the priory's precentor, and Robert de Celeysia do not have any letter authorising them to act for the priory and he asks the prior to send them such letters in the form specified. Another copy is to be sent to the cardinals.
Given at St Martin de Monte [Abbey], Viterbo [Roma, Italy].

Endorsed with address, 'dd' 'dd', and note that the document was received on 30 Jun in late 13th cent hands.
