Description | The prior and chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory were oppressed by the confirmation and consecration of 'Dominus' Walter Scammel as bishop of Salisbury because their consent to his confirmation and to his consecration outside the church of Canterbury had not been obtained. An appeal was made to the pope on both points and both parties sent their proctors and messengers to Rome. Edward I and others intervened to promote peace and at length the bishop and prior and Henry de Depham and Walter of Chillenden, monks of Canterbury Cathedral Priory and proctors representing the chapter, have submitted to the arbitration of Mgr Gilbert de Sancto Leofardo, official of the court of Canterbury, and Richard de Ferringes, archdeacon of Canterbury, Given at the New Temple, London.
Endorsed 'Submissio Sar' W scamel' in late 13th cent hands. |
