DescriptionFrom: Christopher Hales
To: the prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory

Relating to land at Rushenden [in Minster in Sheppey], occupied by Fuller and his servants, which Christopher viewed with John Cheyny, John Davy and 2 honest men of the Isle of Sheppey. They also examined a deed relating to adjoining land, which proved conclusively which were the priory's 2½ acres in Rushenden, although it was not the land that John Davy had thought it was and from which he took a distress. Also concerning the priory's land called 'xxv shepen' lease' in its deed but known as 'Monken'hope' in Sheppey which lies between 'Warehope' and 'Westmersshe'. Christopher intends to arrange for this matter to be heard before the lord chief justice at Canterbury on Mon next after Michaelmas. Brownyng of Gravesend has paid him £7 10s, which repays his debt of £7 6s 8d in full and includes 40d towards costs. Christopher asks for the account of the costs, which the priory's manor warden has at Canterbury, to be sent to him at London so that he can recover the full amount. He will remain at Gray's Inn until 31 Aug. Dated 7 Aug, no year. [Date: handwriting. Sheppard, cited below, assigns a date of c1520 to another letter which refers to Christopher Hales acting for the priory. A John Davy of Eastchurch was farmer of the manor of Leysdown in 1513-1514 and 1519-1522.]
Given at Gray's Inn [Middlesex].
