Description | From: Theobald, archbishop of Canterbury
Addressed to all friends and sons of the church of Canterbury. After the death of John son of Amfrid ('Ansfidus'), Theobald returned the manor of Stisted to the prior and convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory as its demesne because Amfrid, John's father, never had a right of inheritance or fee in the manor, as Archbishop Anselm's deeds show, but only held it at farm. After the death of William of Corbeil, Theobald's predecessor, John invaded the manor, of which William had given the priory possession, by violence. Theobald commands that the priory should hold the manor of Stisted as well as it holds any of its other land. Matilda of Saint-Saens ('Sanctus Sidonius') holds the manor at farm with Theobald's permission, without any right of inheritance or fee, and pays the priory an annual payment of £10 at the appointed terms, and after her death the manor shall return to the priory. Matilda has sworn on the gospels to do these things in the priory's chapter house before the convent and William of Ypres, as the chirograph which she has from ('contra') the priory shows. No date. [Date: as in Saltman, cited below.]
Witnesses: Ralph picot; William travers; Thomas the chaplain ('capellanus'); Bernerius the steward ('dapifer'); William the porter ('portarius'); Roger the porter ('portarius')
