John Salisbury, I, prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, and the convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, by an indenture dated 10 Mar 1440, leased a garden in Southwark, Surrey, with houses, 4 high ('altus') tenements and 2 low ('bassus') tenments in it, lying with the garden late of John Burcetere, knight, to east, the garden late of Nicholas James to west, the garden of the master of the Hospital of St Thomas the Martyr, Southwark, to south and the prior's tenement to north, to Roger Wollowe and Richard Wollowe, his son, for a term of 60 years for an annual payment of £4 13s 4d, payable as specified. Richard died and Roger drew up a will leaving the property to John Wollowe, his brother and executor, for the remainder of the term. Roger died soon after and John entered the property. Subsequently, by a deed dated 27 Feb 1479, John granted the land to Ralph, Mgr Thomas Davet, clerk, and Robert Bonsalle, clerk, for the remainder of the term for the annual payment as specified. Thomas and Robert have since died and the term is now vested in Ralph.
Ralph grants the property to Thomas for the remainder of the term of 60 years for an annual payment of £4 13s 4d, payable to the priory as specified, subject to the conditions specified in the original lease.
