Description | Party: Roger de la Lee, prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory Party: Walter of Southchurch The priory grants Walter the wardship ('custodia') of Richard the heir of Southchurch, son of Richard, with all things belonging to the wardship of the heir in the manor of Southchurch. For a term of 3 years. For an annual payment of 18 marks, payable as specified in the priory's treasury at Canterbury. Walter is also to pay £20 a year in the priory's treasury as specified, under the penalty ('sub pena') which the predecessors of Richard of Southchurch were accustomed to render. If the heir of Richard of Southchurch is judged to be of lawful age within the 3 years, the prior will repay Walter 6 marks if a year of the term is wanting, 40s if 6 months are wanting and 20s if 3 months are wanting. Walter promises that he will keep the heir of Richard of Southchurch and the manor honestly and safely. If any dispute ('questio') is moved against the heir because of the manor, Walter will defend and maintain it at his own costs. He will also maintain the boys ('puer') belonging to the heir honourably until the end of the term. Walter binds all his goods to the priory to observe these things faithfully.
