DescriptionFrom: Henry II, king of England

Addressed to the king's sheriffs and bailiffs of Kent. The monks of Canterbury Cathedral Priory are to have all the liberties and customs in Sandwich which they had in the time of Henry I, the king's grandfather, as was acknowledged by same king's command by the oath of 12 men of Dover and 12 of Sandwich, namely that the monks should have the port, toll and all customs ('consuetudines maritimae') in the same port on either side of the water from 'Eadburgegate' to 'Merkesfliete' and a small ship ('navicula') for ferrying ('transfreto'). No-one shall have any right there except the monks and their servants ('minister'). The addressees and the men of Sandwich are to cause the monks to have all customs in the town and port of Sandwich and no-one is to trouble them about this. No date. [Date: after the promotion of Geoffrey Ridel as archdeacon of Canterbury and before the introduction of the 'dei gratia' clause. We are grateful to Prof Nicholas Vincent of the British Academy-AHRB 'Acta of the Plantagenets' Project for advice on this date.]
