A ground enclosed with a stone wall, formerly known as 'Saint Thomas howse', in Sandwich and the adjoining saltmarsh, which they formerly let to Thomas Patche of Sandwich, gent, by a lease dated 25 Nov 1545 for a term of 60 years, for an annual payment of 20d. In that lease 'Saint Thomas howse' was described as being beside Canterbury gate, with 'Saint Thomas lane' to east, the garden of William Blythe and the mill creek ('Myll Cryke') to south, an empty ('voyde') hill and the way leading out of the gate to west and the same highway to north, with a piece of salts ('Sawltes') belonging to it, with the salts belonging to the commonalty of Sandwich to east and west, the haven to north and the highway to south. For an annual payment of 20d, payable as specified. Right of distraint in these lands and Roger's lands in Hackington and penalty of 3s 4d if payment in arrears. Right of re-entry if a grammar school is not built on the land within 3 years and endowed with lands, tenements or rents to the value of £20 a year, or if the school is subsequently converted to other uses. The dean and chapter appoint John Manwood and Rhys Parrott of Sandwich, gents, as their attorneys to deliver seisin to Roger. The grant is made with the licence of Queen Elizabeth I, dated 1 Oct 1563. Note that the document has been compared with the register (in Latin) and Roger's signature on plica.
