Description | From: Nicholas Samuel son and heir of Richard Samuel son and heir of John Samuel of Southchurch in the hundred of Rochford To: the prior and convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory; the tenants of the manor of Southchurch Nicholas has understood that he has a right in the manor of Southchurch which was of Peter of Southchurch, knight ('Chivaler'), and afterwards of Alice and Joan, Peter's daughters and heirs, and afterwards of John, Alice's son, all now deceased, Joan having died without an heir, because he [Nicholas] is John's kinsman and next heir. This is commonly spoken of in the neighbourhood. A great part of the manor is now held by the prior and chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory who have obtained the king's licence. Nicholas has been told that he cannot have or recover any right in the manor through his degree of kinship. He grants that he has no right in the manor so that neither the priory nor anyone who holds part of the manor will not suffer harm in future because of what he has said. If this is not seen by everyone who holds the manor, his acknowledgement and confession may be sufficient to avoid loss or damage in the future. Nicholas, wishing to make satisfaction as much as he can and to save his soul from danger in this matter, quitclaims to the priory and the tenants. Given at Prittlewell [Essex].
