DescriptionFrom: Richard de Bellevue, bishop of Evreux [Eure, France]; the abbot of St Ouen's Abbey, Rouen [Seine-Maritime, France]

They have inspected the charters of Henry II and Richard I which the canons of Rouen have, confirming the grant of their manor of Kingsclere ('clera') [Hampshire. Recites:

(1) Grant of Henry II
The king grants the church of St Mary's Rouen the manor of Kingsclere ('clara') to the use of the canons. The manor is to be free of all gelds, danegelds, hidages, pleas, aids and all things and customs as the king's grandfather, Henry I, held it in his demesne. If anyone holds anything of the manor, let him be disseised, unless he has it by the gift of Henry I or by his writ. The king also grants them the market of the manor and the hundred court ('hundretum'), forfeiture and justice of their own men. The grant is made in perpetual alms for the king's soul, the souls of his father, his grandfather Henry I, his mother and his ancestors and successors and the state of the kingdom ('status regni'). They are to hold the manor in demesne, quit of shire and hundred courts and other dues as specified as Henry I held it. Witness list. No date [1155x1161]. [Date: Thomas Becket, chancellor, is one of the witnesses.]
