DescriptionFrom: William of Eynsford, III, son of William son of William son of Ralph

Of the grant of Eynsford church to the cathedral priory, for the almonry, by his grandfather when he became a monk there. Certain archbishops gave it to some of their clerks. William and his father disputed this. Also concerning William's claims to the manor of Ruckinge. He claims that his grandfather restored the manor to the priory on condition that when Eynsford church fell vacant the manor should return to his heirs. Gives an account of agreement made between Archbishop Richard [of Dover], Prior Alan [I], the priory convent and William before King Henry [II]. In an enquiry testimony was taken from old monks who remembered the grant and who say that no such condition existed. William's son and heir, William, was also present. Then the church was held by Gentilis, nephew of Pope Alexander [III], who is now dead. The church will now revert to the almonry. William claims some clearings, a way and some land near the church. No date. [Date: as in Douglas, p45.]
