When the see of Norwich became vacant on the death of John Salmon there was a dispute about vacancy jurisdiction in the city and diocese of Norwich between the prior and chapter of Norwich and Archbishop Walter Reynolds and his successor, Simon Meopham. Simon, with the consent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, has reached an agreement with Norwich Cathedral Priory.
Recites Simon's composition, dated 22 Jun 1330 at Mortlake [Surrey]. [Apart from a few minor differences in wording and the omission of a clause relating to the appointee's power of granting absolution, this seems to be identical with the slightly later versions cited below.] Details of the scope of the archbishop's sede vacante jurisdiction in Norwich, including procedure for appointing an official and provisions relating to visitation and accepting professions of obedience. Details of the scope of Norwich Cathedral Priory's jurisdiction during vacancies. If the see of Canterbury is vacant at the same time as the see of Norwich, the prior and chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory shall exercise the jurisdiction which the archbishop would have.
Simon promises to observe these conditions and to oblige his successors to do so.
