By an agreement dated 8 Aug 1661 (DCc-ChAnt/M/37), the Dean and Chapter, in exchange for other lands given by Sir Norton as an addition to the common of the manor of Mersham, agreed to grant him licence Sir Norton to enclose a piece of common, containing 8 acres, lying with the common to south and the 'Bowling greene', park and other lands of Sir Norton to west, north and east, on condition that Sir Norton obtained the consent of the tenants of the manor and caused this to be recorded in the court rolls of the manor, which he has done. The land which has been given as an addition to the common is equivalent to the land which has been enclosed. The Dean and Chapter confirm the exchange and grant Sir Norton the piece of common. They agree that they will not interrupt Sir Norton's possession of the land, so long as the tenants of the manor enjoy the piece of land given by him as common in exchange.Dean and Chapter's part of indenture.
