| Description | From: Gaucelin, cardinal priest of St Marcellinus and St Peter; Luke, cardinal deacon of St Mary in via lata
Addressed to all ecclesiastical dignitaries and corporations in England and Scotland. Recites various mandates from Pope John XXII to the cardinals, dated 17 Mar and 29 May 1317 at Avignon [Vaucluse, France], concerning their mission to make peace between King Edward II and Robert Bruce, and gives a detailed account of the unsuccessful progress of the negotiations, including references to the capture of Berwick by the Scots and Robert's refusal of letters taken to him at Roxburgh Castle [Scotland] because they were not addressed to him as king of Scotland. The cardinals impose various ecclesiastical penalties, including excommunication, on Robert and his followers, and command the addressees to make the contents of this document public.
