TitleNotarial exemplification of an appeal
Date25 Mar 1296x24 Mar 1297
Description[Document damaged. Some details, including part of the date, lost.] An appeal to the pope [by Mgr John, rector of Woodchurch?] has been delegated to William de Cruceroys, archdeacon of Chichester, and Roger de la Grava, canon of Chichester. They cited Richard de Clyve, monk of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, to appear in Chichester Cathedral by means of the rural dean of Canterbury, contrary to the constitution of Pope Boniface VIII and the liberty of the priory. Richard, fearing that this citation may be to his prejudice in the future, appeals against it to the pope and appeals to the protection (tuition) of the see of Canterbury. He also appeals lest the judges absolve Mgr John, rector of Woodchurch, from the sentence of excommunication imposed on him by the prior and chapter of Canterbury. Dated 1296, month and day lost.
Made ('Facta') before the shrine of St Thomas in Canterbury Cathedral in the presence of Mgr Thomas, rector of Adisham, Andrew de Feretro, Dunstan of Canterbury, clerk, and John de Bourne, layman.
Notarial attestation and sign of Henry de Tichfeld, clerk, notary public, of Winchester diocese, who wrote the document.
