| Description | Relating to an office case brought by E de Stok', commissary of Richard Gravesend, bishop of London, concerning the obligation of the prior and convent of Prittlewell Priory [Essex] to repair the chancel of Canewdon church [Essex], which they have appropriated. The priory was warned to repair the chancel by Henry, vicar of Wakering [Essex] and when they ignored this was summoned to St Paul's Cathedral to explain why it should not be compelled to do so. The priory failed to appear and the judge assigned another date. At that time, its proctor, William de Northampton, exhibited an instrument with no seal or other mark of authentication and the judge assigned another day. On that day the priory put forward nothing in its defence and the judge ordered that it should be compelled to repair the chancel. E de Stok' sent a mandate to the rural dean of Rochester, telling him to warn the priory to repair the chancel. If it did not do so within 15 days, the rural dean was to suspend the prior and subprior from celebrating divine service. The rural dean warned the priory at Prittlewell and Canewdon, and when nothing was done after 15 days he suspended the prior and subprior. Recites documents dating between 22 Nov and 17 Dec 1293. No date. [Date: date of last document recited.]
