| Description | From: James, canon of Bologna, doctor of decretals, auditor of contradictory letters
Luke de Guartino, clerk, sought letters from the pope and Philip de Pomonte [proctor of Canterbury Cathedral Priory] sought a copy for himself. Recites letters of Pope Nicholas III, addressed to the prior of Leeds Priory, dated 13 Dec 1278 at St Peter's Rome. Concerning the authority of Robert de Stelefey, official of the prior and convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, over Robert of Bredgar ('Brandegar'), master of the hospital of Newark, Maidstone. Robert de Stelefey, in the name of the cathedral priory acting sede vacante, claims jurisdiction over Robert of Bredgar because of the hospital and the church of Farleigh in Rochester diocese, which Robert of Bredgar has appropriated to his own use. Robert of Bredgar claims that only the archdeacon of Canterbury can exercise the archbishop's authority when the see of Canterubry is vacant. He has appealed to the pope so that Robert de Stelefey should not act against him and when Robert de Stelefey pronounced sentences of interdict, suspension and excommunication against him and sequestrated the fruits of Farleigh church he appealed again. The prior of Leeds is to investigate. Given at St Peter's Rome [Roma, Italy].
Endorsed with description, referring to Robert of Bredgar as master of the 'domus dei' at Maidstone, in late 13th cent hand. |
