| Description | From: Edward III, king of England King Edward II gave the prior and convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory licence to acquire lands, tenements and rents to an annual value of £20 for the maintenance of 7 chaplains to celebrate mass each day in the chapel of St Thomas next to the priory gate [in the almonry] for the souls of himself, his ancestors and all the faithful departed, the statute of mortmain not withstanding. The king, wishing his father's grant to be given due effect, has given Alexander Hanekyn, clerk, licence to grant 1 messuage, 18 acres of land, 2 acres of meadow, 5 acres of pasture and 3 acres of wood in Mersham. The lands are worth 8s 2d annually, as valued by Reginald le Forster, escheator in Surrey. The grant is valued at 13s 4d a year, in part satisfaction of the £20. Sent patent. The clerk is Grym.
