| Description | From: Edward I, king of England
Addressed to the captains of sailors, sailors, sheriffs and all the kings bailiffs and faithful men. The prelates and clergy of the king's realm have freely given him half of their benefices and goods of which the last tenth in aid of the Holy Land was granted as a subsidy in the present year. The king, wishing to provide for their peace and tranquility has received their men, lands, rents and all other possessions into his hands. He commands the addressees to protect the clergy and their possessions and not to interfere with them or allow them to be harmed in any way. If anything belonging to the clergy has been forfeited it should be put right without delay. The protection is to last for a year. The king forbids the addressees to take any of the clergy's corn or other goods without their permission and anything that is taken should be spent to their advantage. 'Cantaur' at bottom left of document. Given at Westminster [Middlesex].
Endorsed with description, stating that the document is a general protection for the whole clergy of Canterbury, in late 13th cent hand and note that the seal [no longer present] is that of EdwI in late 19th cent hand. |
