| Description | From: Peter, archbishop of Aachen [Germany], auditor of contradictory letters ('audiencie litterarum contradictarum officium gerens') Mgr Ralph of Horncastle, proctor of St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury, obtained papal letters for the abbey. Recites letters of Pope John XXII to the prior of St Gregory's Priory, Canterbury, dated at Avignon, 20 Dec 1319. These state that the parishioners of Milton Regis parish, Canterbury diocese, which the abbey has appropriated, have been refusing to pay their tithes to the abbey, alleging that thye never paid them before. The prior is to investigate, and if the parishioners should pay tithes to the abbey, he is to apply ecclesiastical censure. Mgr Brice of Sharstead, proctor of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, has opposed this, on the grounds that this letter should not apply to the priory, its officials ('offic'') or servants ('minister') and Ralph, in Peter's presence, has promised that it will not. Letter 'G' at bottom of document. Given at Avignon [Vaucluse, France].
Endorsed with description, stating that the cautio relates to Milton Regis, Faversham, Selling, Kennington and Preston next Wingham in 14th cent hand. |
