| Description | From: Alan de Cavocampo, clerk To: Richard de Clyve, commissary of the consistory of Canterbury, sede vacante In reply to Richard's mandate of 8 Apr 1293, given at Canterbury, instructing Alan, who is addressed as Alan de Holefeld', to enquire into the vacancy of Monkton next Newnham [Mountain in Newnham, Kent]. Alan has summoned the local clergy, including the vicar of Ospringe, the rector of Otterden, the vicars of Doddington and Newnham and the chaplains of 'Burdefeld', Luddenham and Stone, and they say that the benefice has been vacant since 10 Mar 1292, when 'Dominus' Richard de Pevenese, chaplain, the last rector, resigned. The patron is Nicholas of Mountain ('de moneketon'), there are no legal disputes affecting the benefice and the living is worth 40s. They are satisfied that the candidate being presented is suitable. Given at Ospringe.
