| Description | From: Robert Dudley, earl of Leicester, Baron of Denbigh, Knight of the Orders of the Garter and St Michael, Master of the Queen's Horse and member of the Privy Council The dean and chapter of Canterbury leased the site and court lodge of the manor of Monkton with the houses, barns, stables, courts, orchards, meadows, marshes, pastures, the windmill called 'Monkton myll', the 'Milborough' called 'Accolde Milborough', 'Beadle corne', 'the Hosande', 'Dowles', salt marshes outside the walls and precincts of Monkton marshes and the lands called 'Graie mershe' in Monkton to Sybil Orchard of Monkton, widow, for a term of 14 years, for an annual payment of £62 10s, payable as specified in the nave ('body') of the cathedral. The lease was granted on condition that if the rent was not paid or anyone to whom the lease was transferred did not surrender the old lease to the dean and chapter and receive a new one the original lease should be void. Sybil granted the lease to Robert by a deed dated 6 Dec 1582. Robert surrenders the lease to the dean and chapter. The surrender is made on condition that the dean and chapter shall grant him a lease of the manor for the remainder of the unexpired term, that is until 30 Sep 1595. Robert's signature on plica. |
